Useful tips: the best neighbourhoods to stay in
Naples is a very large city and, in addition to the historic centre, boasts several very central areas that can offer services and attractions suitable for various target groups. The choice depends entirely on the type of holiday you want to experience. If you are visiting Naples for the first time or if you have little time, e.g. for a weekend, the best solution is the historic centre, i.e. the area around Spaccanapoli and the Decumani area.
If you are travelling with your family, we recommend the area of San Ferdinando and Chiaia, i.e. the districts facing the sea and including the famous Lungomare Caracciolo Napoli. Ideal for families and budget travellers are the Vomero and Posillipo districts, the city's most exclusive, with wonderful panoramic views over the entire gulf.
If you are looking for nightlife or cheaper accommodation, then we recommend the Porto district, also known as the university area, due to the presence of the famous University of Naples. Via Toledo is also a good compromise, due to its very central location.

Naples area guide
Naples is a large city, divided into 10 districts, which in turn are divided into neighbourhoods, each with its own attractions. In addition to the actual historic centre, each area of the city can be considered central, thanks to its places of historical, cultural and scenic interest.
In any case, there is a sort of periphery of the city, comprising those districts without significant attractions and mostly residential, such as Fuorigrotta, Arenella or Bagnoli, but in any case well connected by public transport to the centre. These are therefore areas not to be taken into consideration for your stay, as in the centre of Naples it is possible to find plenty of solutions to suit all budgets.
Areas to avoid: definitely Scampia, Secondigliano, Barra, Ponticelli, San Giovanni a Teduccio, Rione Traiano and Poggioreale. In the centre, some iconic neighbourhoods such as Rione Sanità or Quartieri Spagnoli may be affected by petty crime, so it is advisable to visit them only during the day.
Centro Storico / Montesanto, Spaccanapoli, San Gregorio Armeno
The historic centre of Naples is the best area to stay, especially if you are visiting Naples for the first time, but it is not easy to locate. It is developed around the sub-quarter of Montesanto and the Decumani area, i.e. San Gregorio Armeno, Spaccanapoli, Piazza del Gesù and via dei Tribunali. Here you will find attractions such as the Santa Chiara Complex, the Sansevero Chapel and the Duomo of San Gennaro. Instead, we advise you to avoid the easternmost area, the area around Piazza Garibaldi and the railway station of the same name, and the area around Piazza Cavour in the evening.
It is a central and quite hectic area, also bustling in the evenings. Ideal for everyone, but recommended especially for young people. However, it is a safe area, offering many types of accommodation, from simple flats or B&Bs to more luxurious hotels with all comforts.
Moreover, thanks to the numerous metro stops, you can reach all other areas of Naples easily, quickly and comfortably. The main stops are Piazza Cavour, Museo and Dante (all line L1).
Average prices in the district range from around €33.00 for low-cost accommodation to €400.00 for high-budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodation on booking

San Ferdinando / Lungomare San Lucia, Piazza del Plebiscito
The other area of the historic centre that runs towards the seafront is San Ferdinando, a district that includes the famous Piazza del Plebiscito and the sub-district of Santa Lucia, completely facing the sea. Here you will find attractions such as the Maschio Angioino, the Galleria Borbonica, the San Carlo Theatre and the characteristic Borgo Marinari with Castel dell'Ovo.
It is the perfect place to spend a peaceful stay by the sea! It is therefore ideal for families and couples seeking a romantic atmosphere. Young people, on the other hand, can move to the north-easternmost part of the district, after the Galleria Umberto I, towards the harbour area, with numerous clubs and a livelier nightlife.
This area is ideal for exploring on foot, but also good for travelling to other neighbourhoods, thanks to the Municipio metro station (line L1). It is also close to Terminal Napoli, a port where cruise ships arrive or ferries depart for visits to nearby islands.
Average prices in the district range from around €29.00 for low-cost accommodation to €105.00 for high-budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodation on booking

Pignasecca / Via Toledo
Photos by Mister No. Just 400 m from Montesanto, you will find the Pignasecca district, the true starting point for reaching the shopping street, the famous Via Toledo, which, taken to its end, leads to Piazza del Plebiscito, the Maschio Angioino and the port.
This is a very elegant street and one of the most interesting areas to stay in, within walking distance of the historical centre. It is also quieter and with a more relaxed nightlife, making it ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. It also has cheaper prices than the historical centre, ideal for those who want to save money.
The area is very well served by public transport, especially thanks to the Toledo metro stop, a real attraction of the city of Naples, as well as a station on the L1 line.

Chiaia / Mergellina
The Chiaia district is an elegant area overlooking the sea, and lies between the Vomero district and the famous Lungomare Caracciolo Napoli. Staying in this area, you can stroll along Via dei Mille, the street with luxury boutiques and famous jewellers. A few steps away, however, there is also access to the Villa Comunale and via Caracciolo. In the westernmost part is the small sub-district of Mergellina, one of the most luxurious in Naples, with a view of the harbour and numerous fashionable clubs.
This area is ideal for couples and families on a higher budget and for those looking for a quiet, relaxing neighbourhood with beautiful sea views! Right on the seafront is in fact the Rotonda Diaz vantage point, where the city's Mappatella Beach is also located. In this neighbourhood you will find some of the most exclusive and luxurious hotels in all of Naples!
The area is very central and well connected to the rest of the city. Here are in fact the metro stations of Piazza Amedeo (line L2) and the railway station of Napoli Mergellina, connected by trains that go directly to the station of Napoli Piazza Cavour in the city centre.
Average prices in the district range from around €47.00 for low-cost accommodation to €320.00 for high-budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodation on booking

Vomero
Photo by pietro scerrato. Anelegant district of Naples, it is located on a hill that can be reached by funicular. The main attractions of this area are undoubtedly the Certosa di San Martino and Castel Sant'Elmo, from which there is a wonderful view over the whole city, but also the very popular Via Scarlatti and Piazza Vanvitelli, full of fashionable shops and numerous clubs.
This district was once the haute bourgeoisie quarter; here you will find elegant streets and numerous cafés, wonderful views of the entire Gulf of Naples and a romantic atmosphere! The Vomero is therefore suitable for families and couples or anyone who wants a quiet and romantic stay. Due to its characteristics, it follows that the area also has higher prices and is therefore not entirely recommended for those who want to save money.
A little further from the centre, to get down to the other neighbourhoods it is necessary to use the sloping railway, with several stops throughout the district. The area is however served by the metro, with the Vanvitelli and Quattro Giornate stations (both line L1).
Average prices in the neighbour hood range from around €46.00 for low-cost accommodation to €150.00 for high-budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodation on booking

Port / University area
Photo by pietro scerrato. Between Corso Umberto I and Via Nuova Marina is the port district of Naples, which in turn includes the university district, due to the presence of theUniversity of Naples Federico II. It is a young and lively district, precisely because of the presence of numerous university students, where there are no particular attractions but it is an excellent strategic point for getting around.
This area is therefore especially recommended for young people. Here you will find numerous clubs and a particularly active nightlife! We advise you to look for accommodation in the area around Corso Umberto I and Nuova Marina, but avoid the Porta Nolana station area of Naples, which should be avoided at night!
As already mentioned, this district is strategically located, as in no time you will be in the area of Piazza del Plebiscito or in the historic centre. The area is served by the Università metro stop (line L1).
Average prices in the neighbour hood range from around €35.00 for low-cost accommodation to €150.00 for high-budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodation on booking

Posillipo / Marechiaro
Theother VIP quarter of Naples is Posillipo, home to wealthy residences, with a priceless view of the Gulf. It is the natural continuation of Mergellina although, precisely because of its elevated position, Posillipo is more scenic. More than for museums or monuments, it is desirable precisely for the view and tranquillity.
It is therefore an ideal neighbourhood for families and those seeking tranquillity, away from the city and the nightlife. Being a very exclusive neighbourhood, it also has higher prices than the centre of Naples.
It is not recommended for those who want to save money and young people, but also for those who have little time or are visiting the city on a weekend, because here you are far from the centre and the main attractions. Moreover, the whole area on the coast is not served by the metro, which is instead located inland near the railway station (Napoli Piazza Leopardi-Napoli Piazza Garibaldi direct train or metro L2, 25 min). It is more recommended for those who reach Naples by car.
Average prices in the district range from around €75.00 for low-cost accommodation to €410.00 for high-budget solutions - compare the selection of the best accommodation on booking
